Dora O. Tovar, president of Tovar PR LLC., has over 17 years public relations experience on behalf of advocacy organizations, government and corporate America in California, Texas, Washington, D.C. and New York. She has developed consumer awareness campaigns in top markets for regional and global clients. Ms. Tovar blends her policy training, community leadership and communications experience to enhance client relationships with corporate America, consumers, the media and in the court of public opinion. As director of public relations for the premier US Hispanic advertising and communications agency, she led the department in the design and execution of corporate and community public relations programs for flagship clients—Kraft, Oscar Mayer, Post Cereals, and won PR assignments from Blockbuster, McDonald’s and Lincoln Mercury and several other global brands. In addition, she directed internal and external communications for the agency and its five regional offices. Ms. Tovar successfully promoted the agency with major trade and business publications including Crains, AdAge, PRWeek, PR News, Businessweek, the Wall Street Journal, American Demographics, The New York Times and many other national Hispanic marketing publications. To this position she brought her experience and relationships developed while serving as regional manager of corporate affairs for the Texaco and Shell brands in the US western region. As manager, she hired and supervised outside media relations firms for issue and long-term media management. Ms. Tovar immediately acquired an expertise in crisis communications and served as the spokesperson and strategist for several highly scrutinized issues in the media for the refining industry. She was successful in maintaining and maximizing brand position when under the spotlight of 60 Minutes, 20/20, CBS Nightly News and CNN.
Ms. Tovar’s tenure as an advocate and leader in Hispanic issues also gave her valuable insights in the corporate responsibility arena. She heightened the visibility and public positioning of the non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the inclusion of Hispanics in corporate boardrooms. She crafted a communications strategy for the organization that garnered the attention of Jesse Jackson’s Wall Street Project, Time Warner and NBC. Her dialogue with Fortune Magazine led to expansion of the tenets of their annual ranking of Best Companies for Minorities to Work.
In the area of marketing, Ms. Tovar has extensive experience working with corporate marketing departments and provides media, public and government relations counsel for brands and products. She provides litigation and crisis communications including communications development for compliance with federal guidelines. In addition, Ms. Tovar provides clients market research, creative direction, editing and production of Spanish and English language advertisements for television, radio, video news releases and media tours.
Ms. Tovar is frequently asked to write about such thorny subjects as federal budget bringing a refreshing perspective to issues such as toxic waste, energy, power generation, US-Mexico relations, telecommunications and health policy. She enjoys public speaking and has presented on these topics while serving as a US delegate in Malaysia and Indonesia.
